Fair Winds Collective meets school
The 6th-grade classes had a special visitor: our former colleague Peggy Engelmann (founder of Fair Winds Collective).
Peggy shared her adventure of transporting fair trade organic products like cocoa across the Atlantic to Germany – by sailing ship. The students asked many curious questions and learned firsthand how sustainable trade can work even at sea.
Peggy also sailed as an educator with High Seas High School – The Sailing Classroom. High Seas High School is a unique school project in which young people spend several months aboard a tall ship. There, they not only sail together but also learn, take on responsibility, and discover the world in a very special way.
But Peggy also talked about the other side of seafaring: oceans increasingly polluted by plastic, oil, and chemicals. Massive drilling platforms pierce sensitive ecosystems, and container ships as well as cruise giants burn heavy fuel oil – one of the dirtiest fuels there is. The result: toxic exhaust gases, soot, and a sea under growing pressure.
Her message was clear: if we want to protect the oceans, we need to find new ways – just as she does, with wind power, fair trade relations, and an awareness that every form of transport leaves a trace.
To conclude, everyone got to taste fairly sailed, roasted organic cocoa beans – and, of course, enjoy fair trade organic chocolate. A heartfelt thank you to the 6th-grade classes for your curious questions – and to Peggy Engelmann, who came all the way from Amsterdam to visit us.
